Here’s how it works:When I want to find the best accommodations, I turn to TripAdvisor. It’s a great website that shows me what other travelers think of different places. But sometimes, it’s hard to know which one is really the best, especially when they all have good reviews. That’s why I trust Pippa de Bruyn. She’s been reviewing accommodations for 18 years and knows how to find the hidden gems. For her latest adventure in Bainskloof, she had a long list of 24 places to check out. Let me share with you what she discovered.

What we found about accommodation here

– You won’t believe how close these places are to the city. Just a short 30 to 40-minute drive from Gauteng’s busy urban areas, you can escape to peaceful nature reserves and conservancies.

– If privacy and safety are important to you, then you’ll love these accommodations. They are located behind gates and often have security guards, so you can relax and enjoy your alone time.

– When researching this area online, it’s not easy. You’ll have to use different keywords like `Cradle of Humankind`, `Muldersdrift`, `Lanseria`, `Hekpoort`, `Krugersdorp`, and `Magaliesburg/Magaliesberg`. Make sure to cast a wide net to find the best options.

READ  KZN s Rocky Bay Resorts is a birding wonderland

– Pippa focused on accommodations that are within a 10 to 30-minute drive from Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves, especially to the east. She excluded Hekpoort since it was already covered in a previous article.

– This area is a popular destination for weddings, so you’ll find many large resorts and venues that cater to these events. However, if you’re looking for a more intimate and romantic experience, focus on the smaller spots tucked away in the bush or near rivers.

– Keep in mind that weekends can get busy, especially during the summer and wedding season. It’s best to book your accommodation well in advance to secure your spot. On the other hand, weekdays are less busy, and you can often find last-minute deals. Plus, many places offer lower rates from Sunday to Thursday.

A Great Choice for Braai Enthusiasts

Hey there! Have you been searching for the perfect place to stay where you can enjoy a fantastic braai? Well, look no further because I’ve got an amazing recommendation for you!

Introducing the Fish Eagle at Ibis River Retreat! This place is absolutely wonderful and will fulfill all your braai dreams. It’s truly a hidden gem located in Magaliesburg, and it has been ranked as one of the top 10 speciality lodgings by TripAdvisor.

When I heard about Fish Eagle, I was immediately intrigued. I mean, who doesn’t love a good braai, right? But what really caught my attention was the fact that it’s not just about the braai – it’s the whole experience. From the moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by the most beautiful nature and a peaceful retreat atmosphere.

Let me tell you a little bit more about it. Fish Eagle is nestled in the heart of Magaliesburg, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and river. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And the best part? They have all the facilities you need to have an incredible braai experience.

The Fish Eagle at Ibis River Retreat has a dedicated braai area where you can grill to your heart’s content. They provide everything you need – from the braai equipment to the wood and charcoal. You don’t have to worry about a thing! Just bring your favorite meat and get ready to enjoy a delicious meal.

But it’s not just about the braai. The retreat offers a range of activities to keep you entertained during your stay. You can go hiking, fishing, or simply relax by the river. And if you’re in the mood for some adventure, they even have quad biking and horse riding options.

So, if you’re a braai lover like me, the Fish Eagle at Ibis River Retreat is the place for you. It combines the love for braai with a stunning natural environment and plenty of activities to keep you engaged. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

So here’s the thing – this little riverside cottage I found in the Crocodile River Reserve is absolutely worth the journey, even if it’s a slow and bumpy 20-minute drive on a dirt road. Trust me, it’s worth it. Now, let me paint a picture for you: this place is oozing with romance. Picture a teeny tiny A-frame stone and timber house, with a loft that’s home to a cozy double bed. You’ll have to climb up a steep ladder to get to it, but it’s so worth it. Downstairs, you’ve got two wicker chairs in front of a fireplace, an open-plan kitchenette, and a small bathroom with just a shower (no tub). Cute, right?

But wait, wait, wait! I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Brace yourself for this: the outdoor space is absolutely incredible. You’ve got a covered porch with a charming little table for two, where you can enjoy a meal or a glass of wine. But that’s not all. Oh no, my friend. Just steps away, there’s a private terrace that’s an absolute knockout. And by knockout, I mean it’s right on the edge of the river, with breathtaking views. But here’s the pièce de résistance: there’s a massive outdoor spa bath. Yes, you read that right. You can have a luxurious soak in a spa bath while taking in the incredible scenery. Now, tell me that doesn’t sound like a dream.

Now, let me tell you about the other delightful things this place has to offer. First off, there’s a thatched lapa next to the swimming pool, where you can book affordable spa treatments. I’m talking a full-body massage for just R400 per person. Trust me, after a long day of exploring, you’ll want to treat yourself to one of these. And if you’re feeling a bit lazy in the morning (no judgment, we all have those days), you can even have breakfast delivered straight to your cottage. Just imagine waking up to a delicious breakfast without having to lift a finger. Sounds pretty perfect, doesn’t it?

Now, here’s a little tip for you: this place is pretty popular. So if you want to experience this little slice of paradise for yourself, I’d suggest booking the first available weekend. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this hidden gem.

Room Tip: If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, Fish Eagle is the perfect choice. But if you’re traveling with your family, I would recommend the two-bedroom Francolin cottage. It has a fireplace, firepit, and an outdoor spa bath nestled among the trees. The property has a total of five cottages, and please note that children under seven are not allowed, except in Francolin due to the open water.

Cost: The two-sleeper cottages start at R800 per person sharing. For a bigger group, the Francolin cottage is available at R2,000 per night and can accommodate up to four people. Please keep in mind that there is an additional charge for single-night stays and during public holidays.

Best luxury bush lodge

2. Cradle Boutique Hotel

No. 3 of 10 Speciality Lodgings, Lanseria

11 of our favourite places to stay in the Cradle of Humankind

Imagine a place nestled in the Cradle Nature Reserve, where breathtaking views of the sprawling bush and the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains await. This hidden gem is the Cradle Lodge, my ultimate choice for a tranquil retreat. With just 16 charming thatched bungalows and a special honeymoon suite, the lodge offers an intimate and exclusive experience.

As I step into the lodge, I am immediately captivated by its stylish and contemporary Afro-chic decor. The bungalows are beautifully designed, featuring spacious layouts and cozy beds adorned with luxurious linen. Each bungalow boasts a private deck, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you. And of course, modern amenities like air conditioning, a minibar, TV, tea/coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi are all provided to ensure your comfort.

One of the highlights of the Cradle Lodge is its enchanting natural pool. Unlike traditional pools, this oasis is deep, chemical-free, and boasts crystal-clear waters filtered by elegant lilies. It’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind, allowing the serenity of nature to rejuvenate your senses.

When it comes to dining, I am delighted by the double-volume restaurant. Its floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding doors seamlessly connect the interior with the outdoor deck, offering unobstructed panoramic views of the surrounding bush. The restaurant serves up delectable meals that cater to every palate, ensuring a memorable dining experience.

For those seeking adventure, the Cradle Lodge has plenty to offer. At an additional fee, you can embark on daily game drives and nature walks led by experienced guides. The lodge also offers an exclusive tour to two fossil digs, including the renowned Malapa Cave where the remarkable Australopithecus sediba was discovered by Prof Lee Berger in 2008. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delve into the wonders of our ancient past.

At the Cradle Lodge, you can expect exceptional service and great value for your money. So why wait? Book your unforgettable getaway now and indulge in the beauty of nature.

Room Tip: If you’re looking for a room that offers both luxury and affordability, consider the original, cheaper category of rooms located on the ground level. Surprisingly, these rooms enjoy a prime front-row location. However, if you desire more space and are traveling with extra guests, the executive rooms on the second level are larger and can accommodate additional beds.

3. Sibani Lodge Tented Camp:

Ranked as the number one choice out of two specialty lodgings in the Cradle of Humankind.

11 of our favourite places to stay in the Cradle of Humankind

I’m thrilled to tell you about Sibani Lodge, a unique destination that I had the pleasure of visiting. Located in the Mt Savannah Game Reserve, this lodge is truly one-of-a-kind. Spanning over 2,000 hectares, the game reserve is home to a variety of magnificent animals including giraffes, kudus, red hartebeests, impalas, sables, and zebras. It’s a real paradise for wildlife enthusiasts like you and me!

When I first arrived at Sibani Lodge, I was immediately captivated by its charm. The Main Lodge offers two deluxe rooms and a suite, while the adjacent Royal Cottages provide an intimate and cozy setting. However, the real gem of this place is the newly launched Tented Camp. I was particularly excited about this venture as it allowed me to experience the authentic glamour of an East African safari.

The Tented Camp consists of four luxurious tents. These spacious tents are unlike any I’ve ever seen before – they’re large enough for you to walk around comfortably. Each tent is beautifully furnished with a king-sized bed, solar lanterns, a cozy couch, and even has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower, basin, and toilet. It’s the epitome of luxury in the wilderness.

What I loved most about the Tented Camp was its secluded location. Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscape, the tents share a magnificent thatched ‘boma.’ This charming space serves as an open-plan lounge and dining area, romantically lit by candles. With a roaring fireplace as the centerpiece, I couldn’t help but feel like I was part of an enchanting story. From the boma, you can enjoy stunning views of the savannah and a bustling waterhole, creating a truly immersive experience.

One of the highlights of my stay at Sibani Lodge was the nature itself. The reserve strikes the perfect balance between being tame and wild. It’s safe enough for one to freely explore and take in the beauty of the surroundings, while still offering the opportunity to witness the wonders of nature. At night, as I lay in bed, I was serenaded by the hauntingly beautiful sound of jackals yipping in the distance. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

If you’re yearning for a getaway that combines luxury with a genuine connection to nature, Sibani Lodge is the perfect destination for you. Whether you’re stargazing under the vast African sky, spotting wildlife during exhilarating game drives, or simply basking in the tranquility of the savannah, this place has it all. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary adventure – visit Sibani Lodge and let yourself be enchanted by its magic.

Looking for the perfect place? Let me help you find your dream getaway. I’ve got some great tips and recommendations just for you.

Imagine this: nestled in the picturesque gardens of a flourishing farm, you’ll find eight adorable cottages. Each of these cottages can comfortably accommodate two people, offering a cozy and intimate retreat. The farm itself spans an impressive 21 hectares and is also home to a vibrant indigenous plant nursery.

As you stroll through the gardens, you’ll discover that each cottage has its own unique charm. Most cottages have an open-plan layout, featuring elegant white steel-frame cottage-pane windows that bathe the interiors in natural light. Step through the charming French doors, and you’ll be greeted by a lush garden teeming with the delightful melodies of birdsong.

Out of the eight cottages, six are fully equipped for self-catering. However, if you’re only staying for a single night or have some additional friends or family joining you, the other two cottages are equipped with a microwave, a small fridge, and tea/coffee-making facilities. These cottages provide a convenient option for a brief stay or accommodating extra guests alongside the self-catering cottages.

What truly sets this place apart is the exceptional care provided by the thoughtful host, David Valoyi. He ensures that your stay is filled with delightful surprises and comforting touches. You can expect complimentary charcoal for your grill, and if you prefer, David will even prepare the fire for you upon request. Additionally, each day you will be treated to replenishments of rusks, filter coffee, and fresh milk, cream, and butter, sourced directly from the farm’s own dairy herd.

Should you wish to take a break from cooking, there’s a charming tearoom on-site that serves mouthwatering breakfasts and light meals at great value. And if you’re planning a special gathering or celebration, the friendly staff will gladly assist you in creating a memorable event on the luscious lawns of the farm.

So why wait? Escape to this enchanting retreat, where nature’s tranquility and the warm hospitality of David Valoyi await you.

The perfect budget-friendly nature getaway

5. Bush Willow Tented Camp

Ranked as the 4th best out of 12 specialty lodgings in Muldersdrift

11 of our favourite places to stay in the Cradle of Humankind

What an incredible contrast! I can hardly believe that just a short four-minute drive through the vast resort grounds of Glenburn Lodge brings you to the majestic Zwartkops Mountains, nestled in the midst of lush bush and alongside the tranquil Blaauwbank River. It truly is a sight to behold – the river whispers in the background, its presence revealed only by the multitude of trees surrounding it. This place is a sanctuary of peace and privacy, centered around a spacious boma area and a charming circular pool.

The camp comprises ten walk-in tents, thoughtfully arranged in two rows on sturdy platforms. Each tent has the capacity to sleep up to six people comfortably – making it the perfect option for larger groups. If you don’t intend on booking the entire camp, only two tents are allocated per group. Inside each tent, you’ll find all the essential amenities: a convenient indoor shower, toilet, and wash basin. Additionally, there’s a small kitchenette complete with a kettle, two-plate stove, bar fridge, and a sink. Outside, a delightful deck awaits, complete with a table and a built-in braai area for those wonderful outdoor gatherings. Be aware that this is a no-frills experience – expect simple plastic chairs, no cutlery or crockery, and the option of bringing your own linen or paying a small fee (R85 per person) to have it provided for you. But believe me when I say that the location alone is worth every penny. In fact, it’s quite unbeatable.

A bonus perk is that campers also have full access to the fantastic amenities and facilities offered by Glenburn Lodge itself. So you truly get the best of both worlds – the tranquility of nature, coupled with the conveniences and services of a top-notch resort.

Here’s a tip: If you’re looking for more privacy, you can book a tent with internal canvas walls that are divided. The tents numbered 1 and 9 are closest to the river, while numbers 2 to 5 are situated near the pool and boma area. If you’re interested, catering can also be arranged for exclusive-use bookings.

About the cost: The open-plan tent costs R710 per night, while the partitioned tent costs R810 per night, and both can accommodate up to six people. Please note that a minimum two-night stay is required. If you’re looking for exclusivity, you can book the entire camp for a starting price of R5,454 per night for a stay of two or more nights.

The Perfect Romantic Getaway:

6. Lethabo Estate

Ranked as the number 1 out of 5 B&Bs/Inns in Lanseria.

11 of our favourite places to stay in the Cradle of Humankind

This wild farm, spanning 60 hectares, sits beside the Crocodile River. The river meanders through banks adorned with trees where otters play now and then. Lise Essberger, the owner, has created various secluded spots along the riverside. These spots are perfect for rekindling or igniting romance. Over the course of two decades, Lise has developed the farm organically, using materials and skills from the local area. She has blended the rough and rustic structures with luxurious Persian rugs, beautiful kelims, elegant lamps, original artworks, outdoor beds, double hammocks, bathtubs big enough for two, and an abundance of candles. Each hideaway cottage boasts a private deck with a splendid view. The constant sound of the rapid river adds to the romance. Lise and her team excel in striking the perfect balance between pampering and privacy. While the restaurant is highly regarded, we suggest experiencing the magic by ordering one of the gourmet picnic baskets and enjoying a peaceful candlelit evening in your cottage.

Welcome to the “Room Tip” section! Let me tell you about my favorite room at Otter’s Hide. This room is absolutely huge, complete with a cozy fireplace. But that’s not all – it also has a luxurious bath and shower that’s perfect for two. And guess what? Both the bath and shower offer breathtaking views. If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience, Otter’s Hide is the room for you.

Next on the list is the Rock Pool Lodge. This place is simply stunning, with a giant fish tank that will leave you mesmerized. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a gorgeous rock pool for you to enjoy. If you’re traveling with a larger group, you can even book the adjoining Stables Cottage along with the Rock Pool Lodge. It’s the perfect option for creating unforgettable memories with friends and family.

Now, let’s talk about the cost. You’ll be happy to hear that the prices at Otter’s Hide and the Rock Pool Lodge are quite reasonable. For just R1,695 per person, you can enjoy the comfort and luxury these accommodations have to offer. And don’t forget, breakfast is included!

Welcome to Cradle Valley – the Best Guest House

Are you looking for the ultimate bed and breakfast experience? Look no further than Cradle Valley, which has earned the top spot as the number one guest house out of the 19 B&Bs/Inns in Muldersdrift.

11 of our favourite places to stay in the Cradle of Humankind

When I was looking for wedding accommodations, I visited several places, but most of them felt like generic corporate spaces. However, I came across Cradle Valley Guest Lodge, and let me tell you, it’s something special. The owner, Wilmé van Niekerk, has an incredible talent for combining vintage and contemporary elements, and her attention to detail is evident in every corner of the lodge. The gardens are just as stunning as the rooms, and I was particularly impressed by the venue room.

What surprised me about the guest lodge is its size – it’s larger than it appears at first glance. There are 21 units spread out across the property, and each one is unique. The bridal suite, in particular, is fabulous. It has multiple mirrors and make-up stations, perfect for the bride and her bridesmaids. Every room has a cozy seating area and a patio, and the entrance is from the garden. The linens are top-notch, made from 100% percale cotton, and there are coffee and tea-making facilities available. The homemade biscuits were a lovely touch, and the bar fridge can be stocked with your own drinks.

This place is not only ideal for a weekend getaway, but it’s also a popular wedding venue. So, if you’re thinking about booking for a weekend, make sure to plan ahead. It’s definitely worth a try, though, and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you’re looking for a place to stay, consider our two cottages. These cottages are bigger, more private, and offer self-catering options. Cottage 1 has three bedrooms and can sleep up to six people. It boasts a well-furnished deck with breathtaking mountain views. Cottage 2, also known as the Groom’s Suite, has one bedroom but can accommodate two extra single beds. It features an outdoor area with fantastic lighting, perfect for al fresco entertainment.

Cost: The cost is R750 per person sharing, including bed and breakfast.

Worth a Look:

8. Pine Valley I discovered this amazing place called Pine Valley. It’s a huge property with 11 cozy accommodations that have their own gardens. There are also two central areas for barbecues and swimming called braai lapas. What I love about this place is that you can book a newly renovated chalet called the Rooster Chalet, which can easily accommodate four people. If you’re planning a family gathering, there’s the Tawny Eagle chalet that can sleep up to 10 people. And if you’re looking for a fun stag or hen night destination, Pine Valley is perfect for that too. The owner, Geoff Maud, and the manager, Mike Kekana, are really wonderful people. Oh, and did I mention it’s only R400 per person when you’re sharing? That’s a total bargain! Check out their website at pinevalley.co.za for more information.

9. Kloofzicht Out of all the resorts in the area, my absolute favorite is Kloofzicht. This place is top-notch, earning a well-deserved five-star rating. It’s situated in a stunning location, overlooking tranquil dams that reflect the breathtaking Zwartkops mountains. Plus, they offer exciting activities like hot-air ballooning and fly fishing. And here’s an added bonus for families: children under 12 only have to pay for meals! The atmosphere at Kloofzicht is serene, but it does have a tad of a corporate vibe. However, with prices starting from R1,370 per person for bed and breakfast, it’s definitely worth it. Visit their website at kloofzicht.co.za to make a booking and experience luxury.

10. Avianto

Avianto is a place that experts say specializes in hosting the most perfect weddings. It’s a lifestyle estate that offers luxurious hotel rooms in a charming faux Tuscan village. Imagine strolling down neatly arranged lanes adorned with beautiful roses and towering cypresses. You can stay in one of their en-suite hotel rooms for just R1,200 per person, which includes a delicious breakfast. But if you’re attending a wedding as a guest, you’ll only have to pay R950 per person.

Visit avianto.co.za to learn more.

11. Honeymoon Suite at Hakunamatata

Hakunamatata has a hidden gem – the Honeymoon Suite. This cozy room boasts a private deck and a four-poster bed set in front of a warm fireplace. And guess what? It’s an absolute steal at just R510 per person, including breakfast. The Hakunamatata resort itself is small and intimate, with only eight thatched two-sleeper units. You’ll be surrounded by lush gardens, and they have a fantastic spa, friendly staff, and a tranquil atmosphere.

Visit hakunamatata.co.za for more information.
