11 fantastic stays near Addo Elephant Park

If you’re looking for a fantastic getaway, the Sundays River Valley is the perfect option. This booming citrus farming area is located near the magnificent Addo Elephant National Park, offering you the chance to witness incredible wildlife up close.

11 fantastic stays near Addo Elephant Park

Have you heard of Addo Elephant Park? It’s famous for its elephants, and sometimes, it can get fully booked. But don’t worry, there are some amazing alternatives nearby that you should consider. Teagan Cunniffe captured a beautiful photo of one of these stays.

Here’s how it works:

At TripAdvisor, you can find a list of accommodations that are rated by guests. However, even though we love hearing from fellow travelers, these reviews don’t give us a clear comparison. So how can we know if the number one ranked accommodation is really the best? To find out, Pippa de Bruyn, who has been reviewing accommodations for 18 years for reputable sources like Frommer’s and the UK Telegraph, takes a deep dive into TripAdvisor and other online sites when she’s researching a destination. When exploring the Addo area, she created a longlist of 32 accommodations to personally inspect.

Here’s what we discovered about the accommodations in and around Addo:

Wow, what a deal! Let me tell you, the focus here is on true hospitality. Imagine friendly hosts who are thrilled to share their amazing valley with you, all at incredibly low prices. I mean, seriously, you won’t believe how lucky you are to have this right at your doorstep!

And the options are endless! Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for some fancy pampering, there’s a perfect place for you. Trust me, the range of bed and breakfasts, guest houses, and self-catering accommodations is mind-blowing. It was hard for me to pick just one!

Don’t be fooled by the price tag, though. The quality of these places has nothing to do with the cost. In fact, you’ll often find that the most extraordinary experiences are half the price of those average options. It’s like finding hidden treasures and getting even more bang for your buck. It made my trip absolutely satisfying!

Researching online for accommodation in the Addo area can be a challenging task. Simply typing in ‘Addo accommodation’ won’t give you a comprehensive list of options. I’ve found that the best accommodations are actually located to the west of Addo Elephant National Park. There are four main areas to consider: Colchester, Addo, Sunland, and Kirkwood. However, if you want to be close to the park entrance, Addo and Sunland are your best choices (although, it can be confusing because some properties in Sunland are listed as Kirkwood).

The most affordable option near the park

1. Addo African Home

11 fantastic stays near Addo Elephant Park

TripAdvisor ranked Addo African Home as the 2nd best Speciality Lodging out of 12 options

In August 2016, I, Lolo Armand, acquired this two-hectare estate. Just four months later, I transformed it into a stunning lodge, while staying within a tight budget. It features my unique touch and offers a home-away-from-home experience. The lodge presents an intriguing combination: the Rest Camp consists of two spacious tents, each accommodating up to five people. Although the tents do not have en-suite bathrooms, they provide private bathrooms. Additionally, the lodge comprises of the House, which boasts five en-suite bedrooms and a large communal kitchen and lounge-dining area for all self-catering guests.

On the other side of the garden, you’ll find the catered Lodge. It features five charming en-suite rondavels and a main building with three bedrooms. The lodge offers plenty of shade, various private braai areas, and a communal firepit for everyone to enjoy. I take pride in my commitment to ethics as well. In fact, I have constructed an impressive plant-filtration swimming pool. Furthermore, I will be opening an organic-food restaurant later this year. This establishment will hire apprentices from a Khayelitsha community cooking school that I support.

Room tip:

I highly recommend staying in one of the rondavels. I found them to be an absolute delight (see picture). In the House, I particularly liked the Grysbok room due to its private garden entrance and cozy patio.

Cost:

The price for a Rondavel is R665 per person (based on sharing).

Distance from Addo Park:

It is only a seven-minute drive away!

Let me tell you about Elephant House. It’s a magnificent place that reminds me of an old lodge in the Lowveld. When you walk through its corridors, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful decor. Owner Ann Read has filled the space with antique furniture, Persian rugs, and cozy armchairs covered in rich prints. And the courtyards are simply stunning, with their lush greenery and peaceful fountains. The best part? There are only eight rooms, so you’ll have plenty of privacy to enjoy all this luxury.

I had the pleasure of having dinner at Elephant House, and let me tell you, it was a real treat. The menu may not be fancy, but the food is delicious and comforting. And the atmosphere in the dining room is so romantic, especially when the smell of rain from the lawn drifts in. During my visit, I was even treated to an impromptu dance performance before dinner – it was a truly memorable experience.

Just across the road from Elephant House is The Stables. These charming cottages provide even more privacy and savings. Each cottage has its own en-suite bathroom and a lovely shaded veranda where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. And if you’re feeling hot, you can take a dip in the refreshing pool surrounded by a vast green lawn. The only downside is that there is a road nearby, so you might hear some traffic noise.

If you’re planning a visit to Addo Park, Elephant House is the perfect place to stay. It’s only a 10-minute drive away, so you’ll have easy access to all the wildlife and beauty the park has to offer. And if you need more information or want to make a reservation, you can visit elephanthouse.co.za.

In terms of cost, the Stables Cottage starts at R2300 per night for sharing with breakfast included. The Elephant House rooms are also R2300 per night for sharing with breakfast included.

I hope this helps you in your search for a wonderful place to stay. Remember, if you want privacy and savings, go for a Stables cottage. Elephant House and The Stables are both fantastic options, so you can’t go wrong with either choice. Enjoy your trip!

I want to tell you about an incredible camp that I discovered. It’s located in a beautiful game reserve and is perfect for a group of families or friends who want an amazing bush experience without the hassle of setting up tents or worrying about the weather. The best part is that this camp is just a stone’s throw away from Addo Park, sharing a border with it for five kilometers!

Once you arrive at the camp, you’ll find a massive kitchen, dining area, and bar. It’s the perfect place to gather and enjoy a meal or relax around the firepit under the stars. And if you want to take a dip, there’s a lovely swimming pool nearby with its own braai area and plenty of tables for everyone to enjoy.

Now, let’s talk about the sleeping arrangements. You won’t find any cramped tents here. Instead, you’ll have three spacious dorm-style tents with single beds that can accommodate up to 20 people. There’s also a cozy thatched chalet with a bunk bed, single bed, and even a double bed. All the accommodations have wooden decks, and the ablution facilities are well-maintained. And don’t worry about bringing your own bedding or towels, they’ll be provided for you. Just keep in mind that there’s limited solar power, so leave your hairdryer at home. And here’s a bonus – there’s no cell phone reception, giving you a well-deserved break from the outside world.

If you’re worried about staying warm during the night, firewood is available for purchase. And if you have any questions about the camp or want to make a reservation, you can visit intabalodge.com.

In terms of cost, it’s R4300 per person, with children aged six to 13 costing R150. Kids under five can stay for free! And if your group is smaller, there’s a minimum charge of R2200 for the entire camp.

And here’s an important tip – the stone and thatch chalet is the only one with a double bed, so if that’s important to you, make sure to book it!

Avoca River Cabins: Unforgettable Lodgings on the Sundays River

Hey there! I’m excited to tell you all about Avoca River Cabins, a hidden gem nestled on the stunning Sundays River. Dave and Judy Smith, two incredibly hardworking farmers, have created a little village of cozy cottages and cabins right on the river’s edge. These charming accommodations are perched on a terraced ridge and offer breathtaking views of the lush riverbanks and fruitful orchards beyond. Trust me, once you experience this place, it’ll be hard to forget!

Avoca River Cabins is quite the operation – they can accommodate up to 82 people! That means, even if every bed is occupied, there’s still space for you. It’s no surprise this place is a hit. While some kitchens may need a bit of sprucing up (but don’t worry, renovations are in progress), the cabins and cottages themselves are clean, comfortable, and absolutely worth it. And the best part? The price is unbeatable! So you get to enjoy all this beauty without breaking the bank.

Let’s talk about the amenities. Avoca River Cabins doesn’t disappoint! Aside from the breathtaking location and views, there’s tons to offer. They have a jetty complete with kayaks for the adventure-seekers, two swimming pools for those who want to take a dip, a kiddies play area to keep the little ones entertained, and even a dining room that serves delicious breakfast (and dinner upon request) for those moments when you want to take a break from cooking. Oh, and if you’re on a tight budget, they have two rondavels with hot showers and toilets – they’re perfect if you don’t mind skipping the self-catering and braai options.

If you’re looking for a top-notch experience for your whole family, I highly recommend booking one of their four freestanding Riverside Chalets. These spacious chalets come with their own mini lapa, which is basically a large firepit surrounded by comfortable seating. Picture cozy evenings spent by the fire, sharing stories, and making unforgettable memories.

For couples seeking a more intimate and secluded option, the Gymnogene chalet is just the ticket. Situated in a private spot, it offers the perfect romantic setting for you and your special someone. And if you’re planning a getaway with a group of friends, the rustic Bushcamp with its two log cabins is an excellent choice. It can comfortably accommodate six to eight people, ensuring everyone has a fantastic time.

Here comes the important part – the cost. The Riverside Chalets start at R1100, while the Gymnogene chalet is a steal at R1000 for two people. If you opt for the Bushcamp, each cabin costs R950 and houses four people. And if you’re in the mood for a cozy mud hut, it’ll only set you back R400 for two people. Trust me, the prices are incredible considering the experience you’ll have!

When it comes to the distance from Addo Park, Avoca River Cabins is conveniently located just a short 20-minute drive away. So if you’re planning to explore the park, you won’t have to travel far.

So, what are you waiting for? Reach out to avocarivercabins.co.za and secure your spot at Avoca River Cabins. Get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime. I promise, you won’t regret it!

This place has some stunning views from their chalets. They’re thatched and have decks, which adds to the charm. It’s an eco-reserve guest house with a lot of amenities, like pools and a wine cellar. It’s a bit on the pricier side compared to other options in the area. The cost is R1400 per person sharing B&B. You can get in touch with them at hitgeheim.com.
