10 South African craft rums to drink this summer

Hey there! Forget about gin for a minute because I’m about to tell you why rum is the drink you’ve been waiting for.

In March of this year, Rhino Rum made its debut, and they have plans to release a spiced rum in December.

I couldn’t help but wonder, “Why doesn’t South Africa, a country with a rich history of sugar production, have a thriving rum culture?”

This question crossed James Copeland’s mind when he visited a rum distillery in Mauritius. And he’s not alone – many of the new rum-makers in our country looked at our vast fields of sugar cane and thought, “Why not?” As a result, we now have at least 10 local craft rum brands to explore and enjoy.

Did you know that rum can be made in two different ways? One method involves using freshly crushed sugar-cane juice, which is known as ‘rhum agricole’ and is popular in the Caribbean. The other method involves using molasses.

This versatile spirit is not only great for making cocktails, but our craft distillers also recommend enjoying it neat or with a splash of lime or ginger ale. In fact, even Savanna, known for its ciders, has expanded its offerings with a new variant. Last year, they successfully launched Savanna Loco, a tequila-flavored cider. And this year, they’ve introduced Savanna Blackbeard, which features the flavor profile of rum with hints of raisins, spices, and fermented honey.

Keep an eye out for these exceptional rums:

1. When Deep South Distillery opened its doors in November, James had this interesting idea about rum having terroir. He wanted to bring fresh cane juice to the Cape without it spoiling, but ended up using molasses instead. However, he discovered the hidden potential in this by-product of the sugar industry – it holds fine, noble flavors that can be unlocked from its deep dark depths.

2. According to Lorna Scott from Inverroche Distillery in Stilbaai, aged rum is inspiring mixologists to get creative with more bitter, coffee-like, and savory cocktails. Inverroche releases 1500 bottles of its seven-year-old rum twice a year, and you can also try their rare 10-year-old rum. You’re welcome to visit their distillery and explore their shop, open from Monday to Saturday. Tasting tours can be arranged by appointment.

Let’s talk about some unique and interesting rums that you might not have heard of yet. Up first is Tapanga’s limited-edition dark rum, which they describe as “smokier and woodier.” What’s cool about this rum is that everything is done on site at Greg Hill’s farm near Gingindlovu. He wanted to do something different from selling sugar cane to the mill, so he decided to create his own rum. Tapanga Rum is actually the first ‘rhum agricole’ in South Africa, which is pretty impressive. You should definitely give it a try if you’re looking for a unique and locally-made rum.

Next up we have Copeland Rum, which is the newest local craft rum on the scene. This rum has already won awards, so you know it’s good. Right now they only have a white rum available, but they’re working on a spiced rum that will be based on fynbos. If you’re interested, you can even visit the distillery by booking a tour. It’s become quite popular for book clubs and bachelorette parties, so it’s definitely a fun place to check out.

5. Durbanville Distillery Rum is a rum like no other. Created by a dynamic father-and-son team, Robert and Eugene Kleyn, this spirit is the result of their ingenuity and passion. They designed and built a unique vacuum still called ‘Eve’ for the purpose of distilling rum. What sets this still apart is its cold distillation method, which not only produces exceptional quality but also saves on electricity. The white rum they create is then aged in barrels at Meerendal Wine Estate, resulting in their exquisite dark and spiced rums.

6. Zulu Rum is a true pioneer in the craft rum movement. The story of Zulu Rum dates back to 2013 when they first started making waves in the industry. This exceptional rum has not only gained recognition locally but has also won prestigious awards internationally. For example, it was awarded a gold medal at the renowned 2016 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards. What makes Zulu Rum even more captivating is the fascinating history behind its label. It is inspired by a captivating tale of war and triumph. After the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, Zulus claimed victory and, as a spoils of war, seized the British army’s rum rations. This historical connection adds depth and intrigue to every sip of Zulu Rum.

7. Agua Zulu Cachaça. I’m really excited about Agua Zulu Cachaça, which is a type of Brazilian rum made from sugar cane. The folks over at Distillery 031 are all about cachaça and they even have plans to introduce two new rums next year. If you’re looking for a great place to hang out and grab a bite to eat, you should definitely check out the distillery. The bar and restaurant are open from Thursday to Sunday. You’ll get a chance to taste the cachaça in their fantastic cocktails at the rooftop bar. The distillery also offers tours on Saturdays, where you can try out some samples of their spirits. If you have a larger group, they’re happy to accommodate you and set up a tour any day of the week.

8. Rhino Rum is another rum that I think you should check out. It was launched just last year by Eugene Coertzen at Brickmakers, the first craft distillery in Port Elizabeth. What’s really cool is that Eugene actually uses his grandfather’s old still to make his rum. He’s also come out with a spiced version of Rhino Rum. Eugene believes that South Africans haven’t fully experienced the wonders of rum yet. He wants to change that perception and show people that rum isn’t just for sailors. There’s a whole world of flavors and possibilities to explore!

9. Mhoba Rum. Up north, I make this rum with cane that grows on our farm in Mpumalanga’s Crocodile River Valley. It’s a special kind of rum we make in small batches, using only the cane we grow right here on our own estate. We have a range of rums for you to try, including White Rum, Dark Aged Rum, and a new Select Agricole range that we created just for the UK RumFest 2017.

10. Time Anchor Rum. Hi there! I’m Shanna-Rae Wilby, and I make rum as a way to honor my roots. I grew up in Ballito, surrounded by sugar cane. We have exciting plans to release a limited-edition aged rum for next winter. You can visit our distillery on Saturdays and Sundays for tours and tastings, but be sure to book your slot in advance. We make a variety of rums, including White Rum and flavored rums like our Cocoa Rum, made with roasted cocoa beans, and our Vanilla Rum, which is double distilled and bottled with Madagascan vanilla pods.

If you’re looking to explore more rum options, you can also check out the great selection available at Yuppiechef, where you can conveniently order online.
