This city has witnessed numerous significant events, from the Jameson Raid to the Rivonia Trial and the Soweto Uprising. It is also home to iconic landmarks such as Sandton City, Soccer City, and Gold Reef City. Let us not forget the vibrant community of Hillbrow, which has experienced both prosperity and decline over the years. And of course, Johannesburg proudly hosted the Rugby and Soccer World Cup finals in 1995 and 2010 respectively.

And yet… not many South Africans seem interested in exploring, in delving into our history and present, without which we’ll never truly grasp what lies ahead. Jozi is the place where our country’s character has been shaped and continues to evolve. Just recently, I dedicated four days to unearthing the essence of Joburg, and as an outsider – someone who used to scoff at the mere mention of it – I left with a profound sense of being a more well-rounded South African. That, my friends, was an invaluable experience.

Let me start by saying that our country is filled with diverse communities, each with their own unique stories. It’s up to us to bridge the gap, to find common ground and understanding. 1. Explore Soweto

So, where should you go first? Soweto, of course! I had the pleasure of joining Pastor Maswanganyi from Mhlanganisi Tours on a guided tour. With 15 years of experience under his belt, Pastor is incredibly knowledgeable, confident, and familiar with the captivating story of Soweto. It’s astounding, really. Did you know that Soweto is home to a whopping 4 million people? Not to mention the 49 townships, a TV station, its very own beer, over 200 primary schools, 110 high schools, and Avalon, the largest cemetery in South Africa where a staggering 200 people are laid to rest each weekend.

During the tour, we embarked on a captivating township walking tour. We had the opportunity to visit the Hector Pieterson Museum and stroll along Vilakazi Street – a unique street that can proudly claim to have been home to two Nobel Prize laureates, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. 2. Hillbrow Walking Tour

Let me tell you about Dlala Nje. They have this amazing community center in Hillbrow, where they create a safe space for children and young people to learn and grow. You can support their cause by joining one of their inner-city experiences.

Okay, let’s talk about their Hillbrow walking tour. It’s a journey through the streets of Hillbrow and Berea, two neighborhoods in South Africa that have a reputation for being tough. But there’s so much more to these places than meets the eye.

During the tour, you’ll hear stories about “hijacked buildings” and how they became a symbol of the struggles faced by the community. You’ll also learn about the impact of the 2010 World Cup on the city center and how it brought about positive changes. And of course, you’ll discover the rich history of Hillbrow, which used to be the hippest place in Joburg.

They even have an archive in Houghton, where Mandela used to work, that’s filled with all kinds of amazing stuff like handwritten letters from him. It’s like a personal museum!

5. Hang out at Park Corner

I heard many times that Joburgers really know how to have a good time. They love to party and I experienced firsthand the vibrant nightlife in the city. One evening, I decided to explore the bars and restaurants at Park Corner and it turned into an unforgettable night. It all started with a single cocktail but soon turned into many more as I got caught up in the buzzing energy of a typical Friday night in Johannesburg.

One of the standout bars in Park Corner is Sin+Tax, which is known as the pinnacle of the city’s cocktail scene. In fact, it’s the only bar in Africa that made it into the top 100 of the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2019. Sin+Tax pushes the boundaries of innovation and imagination, raising the bar for cocktail culture in South Africa. But let me tell you, there are plenty of other great bars in the area too. I had a fantastic time at A Streetbar Named Desire, Edge of Glory, and Bar Ber Black Sheep. Each of these places has its own unique atmosphere and offers something special for everyone. You can find them all at 2 Bolton Road, Parkwood.

6. Discover the Magic of Maboneng

When I think of Maboneng, the seSotho term for “place of light,” I imagine a thriving hub of creativity right in the heart of Johannesburg. Despite the challenges posed by Covid, this urban neighborhood continues to shine brightly, serving as a dynamic space for artists and visionaries alike. What sets Maboneng apart is its lively and inclusive atmosphere, which can be seen in its diverse range of establishments: from cozy restaurants and coffee shops to stylish clothing boutiques, art galleries, and even retail and studio spaces.

Maboneng not only captivates the local community, including Joburgers, but also attracts art enthusiasts and trendsetters from the city’s suburbs. This infusion of life and energy has breathed new life into the once-downtrodden downtown area of Johannesburg, restoring its vibrancy and charm.

7. Explore Victoria Yards

Imagine this – a place where nature and art coexist in perfect harmony. That’s Victoria Yards, an urban complex that combines gardens, farms, workshops, and galleries. It’s a place where social development and commercial enterprise come together, creating a vibrant and thriving community.

At Victoria Yards, there’s always something happening. One of their most exciting events is the First Sundays programme, where all the art galleries, shops, and eateries open up to the public. If you’re curious about the artistic process, Victoria Yards has you covered. They regularly host open days where resident artists open their studios to the public. It’s a chance to meet the artists, see their works in progress, and gain a deeper understanding of their creative journey.

8. Embark on a journey through The Wilds

The Wilds has undergone an incredible transformation in recent years. Once neglected and abandoned, it was left to the homeless and overgrown with weeds. But thanks to the vision and hard work of artist James Delaney, this park has been reborn.

James Delaney was simply looking for a place to walk his dog, but when he discovered The Wilds, he saw its true potential. He noticed the beautiful trees and hidden corners that the park had to offer. Inspired by this, he took it upon himself to restore the park to its former glory.

And what a restoration it has been! The historic park now boasts stone-cut paths, tranquil water features, and breathtaking views of the city. It has become a haven for visitors, attracting people from all over the city.

But The Wilds isn’t the only green space worth exploring in the city. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Melville Koppies are also must-see destinations. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens showcase the beauty of nature with its wide variety of plant species. Meanwhile, Melville Koppies is a piece of history, the last remaining untouched area of the city from before the gold rush.

9. Apartheid Museum

I gotta tell you, according to Tripadvisor, this place is the absolute bomb in Joburg. It’s the number one place to visit, but guess what? It’s been shut down for almost two years because of Covid. Total bummer, right? This museum is a big deal. It opened back in 2001 and it’s like the ultimate museum for learning about South African history, especially when it comes to that whole apartheid thing. The way they designed this place is pretty epic too. A bunch of fancy architects got together and created this massive building on a huge piece of land. And get this, it’s not just some regular old museum. They had a whole team of experts who put together the exhibits. You’ve got filmmakers, historians, designers, and even curators all working together to make it amazing. They’ve got everything you can imagine – intense films, old photos, informational panels, and even real artifacts. It’s all there to show you what went down during that dark time in our history. I just hope they open it up again real soon. This place is a major draw and it would totally make tourists want to stick around in Joburg for a bit.
