When you step inside the gallery, you’ll find yourself in ‘The Lodge,’ a really old building. It’s like taking a step back in time! The photographs you’ll see there were taken by Alfred Martin Duggan-Cronin, Aubrey Elliot, Jean Morris, and Alice Mertens. These talented photographers have captured the traditional ways of life and the unique clothing styles of the indigenous peoples of southern Africa.

The photos on display at the gallery are from a long time ago, from 1919 to 1980. They show us how people used to live in the past, and it’s a little bit sad because many of those old ways have disappeared with time. But through these incredible photographs, we can still get a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the southern African region.

In 1889, John Blades Currey, an important figure in the London and South African Exploration Company, had ‘The Lodge’ built. Eventually, it became a part of the De Beers estate and took on different functions throughout the years. Some of these functions included serving as a residence for De Beers’ executives and functioning as a guest house. However, in 1938, the De Beers company made the decision to donate the lodge to the Kimberley City Council.

The main reason for this donation was to ensure the preservation of the Duggan-Cronin Collection. To oversee this collection, Alfred Duggan-Cronin himself became its first curator.

When I arrived in Kimberley in 1897, I was filled with inspiration by Maria Wilman. Working in the De Beers compounds, I saw the need to preserve the culture of the indigenous tribes before Western influences changed their traditional way of life. That’s why I started embarking on expeditions across tribal areas, capturing their stories through photography.

Today, the McGregor Museum takes great care in preserving and showcasing this valuable collection. It’s a way for you to step back in time and experience the rich cultural heritage of southern Africa. 5. Mokala National Park

This amazing park, located in the Plooysburg area southwest of Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa, was created on June 19, 2007. The park gets its name from the Setswana word for the magnificent Camelthorn tree, called Kameeldoring in Afrikaans. When you explore Mokala National Park, you’ll see a wide variety of Camelthorn trees, from small, prickly shrubs to towering giants that reach heights of up to 16 meters, with branches sprawling out in all directions.

It’s a wetland covering 400 hectares that used to depend on rainfall but has now become a permanent home for a wide variety of birds. In fact, it’s one of just four places in Africa where the lesser flamingo breeds. This means that people who enjoy birdwatching and appreciate the beauty of nature are drawn to this special spot to see its unique pink-feathered inhabitants.

Every year, I can’t help but feel amazed as I witness thousands of lesser flamingos gathering at Kamfers Dam. It’s truly a spectacle to behold! The reason why these beautiful birds flock to this place is because of the bountiful algae that thrives in its waters. And let me tell you, there is an incredible amount of algae here – approximately 750,000 kilograms! Can you imagine that? It’s like a never-ending feast for the flamingos!

Kamfers Dam is conveniently located just six kilometers away from Kimberley. And guess what? It’s home to the largest Lesser flamingo breeding colony in Southern Africa. The numbers are mind-boggling – there are usually between 60,000 to 80,000 flamingos here. That’s more than half of the entire population in the region!

Isn’t it fascinating to think about how these birds come together at Kamfers Dam every year? It’s as if they have a secret pink paradise that they all know about. They surely know how to find the perfect spot to enjoy their delicious meal of algae and to raise their little flamingo families. It’s a true wonder of nature, and I feel lucky to have the chance to witness it.

Sewage and housing development are running rampant, putting the delicate balance of Kamfers Dam and the flamingos that rely on it in jeopardy.
