Hey there! Summer is here, and what could be better than spending a lazy few days by a beautiful riverside? I’ve got some awesome recommendations for you in the charming little town of Vermaaklikheid. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Let me break it down for you:
So, I went on a little adventure to find a hidden gem – a destination that hasn’t been discovered by the masses yet. I’m talking about a place that doesn’t even have hotels or B&Bs listed on TripAdvisor! After carefully inspecting 21 different properties, I’ve narrowed it down to the top 10 that absolutely blew me away.
Why Vermaaklikheid is a must-visit
When I dip my toes into the river, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. The name Vermaaklikheid, meaning ‘entertainment’ or ‘recreation,’ suits this hidden treasure nestled in the Overberg perfectly. Here, the pleasures of yesteryears reign supreme: swimming, fishing, leisurely walks, and imaginative games. It’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, as phone reception and TV are nonexistent, and electricity is limited.
One of the river’s most enchanting features is its deep, wide, and tranquil waters. It’s a unique experience to swim in the Duiwenhoks River. During the summer, the temperature varies, offering a delightful mix of warm and refreshingly cold spots. It’s as if the river invites me to partake in a harmonious dance, where I alternate between swimming against its gentle currents and surrendering to the current’s embrace. As I float, the picturesque hills draped in fynbos are mirrored on the water’s surface, creating a mesmerizing vista.
Imagine a place where nature thrives
A place untouched by water sports and filled with the peaceful sounds of birds chirping and fish swimming. This magical sanctuary is a haven for anglers and birdwatchers, providing them with endless opportunities to explore the river as it meanders towards the ocean. Along the way, they pass by sandy beaches surrounded by lush reeds and mudflats where children excitedly search for prawns.
Now picture pristine, untouched beaches
Just a short distance away from this idyllic river is a breathtaking estuary. Here, you’ll find miles upon miles of sandy beaches stretching in both directions. And the best part? These beaches are completely uninhabited, leaving only your footprints behind.
Step into a rural paradise
Welcome to this tranquil retreat, where the buildings are scattered across the vast landscape. These charming, predominantly thatched, whitewashed structures are mostly located on spacious plots, resembling mini farms. Don’t expect any modern conveniences like shops, fuel stations, or paved roads. In this special place, you’ll need to open the farm gates by hand. Here, children experience true freedom—unfettered by cellphones and only appearing when they’re hungry. Privacy, space, and complete relaxation await you.
Hey there, rise and shine! Allow me to introduce you to a magical place – a haven for early birds and nature lovers.
Picture this: as the sun peeks over the horizon, the air fills with the melodic symphony of birdsong. Whether it’s the graceful ibises or the slightly off-key cockerels, their chorus is impossible to ignore. What a joy it is to witness the dawn, with mist gently drifting off the tranquil river.
But that’s not all. Prepare your taste buds for a delightful adventure! Just a short 35-minute drive away in Stilbaai lies the Inverroche Distillery, where you can indulge yourself in a unique experience – sampling their exquisite spirits infused with the flavors of the local fynbos. Trust me, their gins are renowned, and their brandy, infused with the essence of this native plant, is destined for greatness on a global scale.
And now, let me present the grandest glamping escapes you could ever dream of:
1. Tented River Camp
This place has an amazing location right next to the river, surrounded by nature. It’s close to the estuary mouth, so you get stunning views. The accommodation is simple but sturdy, with three sleeping pods made of canvas and timber. They’re weatherproof and have enough space to stand in the center. The dining and kitchen area is covered, but this is definitely a place for the summer. There’s a big deck, a picnic table, and a braai pit. You can also set up your own tent on the huge grassy area nearby, but keep in mind there’s only one toilet and one shower cabin. Upstream, there’s another jetty and a shaded dining area with a braai. The river is incredibly beautiful, and once you’re here, you won’t want to leave. However, getting here can be a bit challenging because the access track is steep and not suitable for 2X4 vehicles. If you don’t have a 4X4, you can use a porterage service for your luggage and supplies (for an extra cost). Just be prepared for a fairly tough but absolutely stunning hike in and out.
Capacity: I’m excited to tell you about an amazing property that can accommodate up to eight people! It has three cozy tent-cabins with two double beds and four single beds. This is the perfect place for a group getaway or a family vacation, but please note that it’s not suitable for babies or toddlers.
Cost: Now, I know you’re probably wondering about the price. Well, you’ll be glad to hear that it’s quite affordable! The rates range from R1000 to R3600 per night. It’s important to note that there is a two-night minimum stay requirement. But wait, there’s more! If you book a stay, you’ll also get to use a double canoe, if available.

Best for sea views
2. The Beach Shack
Wow, let me tell you about this hidden gem I stumbled upon in Vermaaklikheid! Picture this: while most of the lodging options are situated along the river, this one stands out because it’s located on the coast, just a little way from the river mouth. And let me tell you, it’s one of the most secluded beach spots you’ll ever come across in the whole country.
To get to this slice of paradise, you have to navigate a steep path that winds its way through rough, craggy sandstone boulders. Be careful though, because it’s quite slippery! But trust me, the breathtaking view waiting for you at the end is well worth the tricky journey.
Now, I have to be honest and let you know that this place is as basic as it gets. The rooms are simple, furnished with beds and they even provide bedding for you. However, don’t expect any fancy headboards or bedside lamps. And forget about towels, there aren’t any. Oh, and here’s a fun fact: only one bedroom actually has walls that reach the ceiling, so don’t expect much privacy when it comes to sound.
Now, I should mention that the kitchen is quite quaint and charming. It may be basic, but it has everything you need – a gas stove/oven and even an electric fridge with a small freezer. But keep in mind that there’s no lounge area to relax in if the weather takes a turn for the worse. So, if you visit on a dreary day, you might find yourself a bit bored.
But, let’s not dwell on gloomy days! When the sun’s out, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be. You’ll get to experience real luxury, trust me. Why? Because right in front of those three rectangular prefab shacks, you’ll find a private beach that stretches on for a whopping 2.5 kilometers. It’s like something out of a dream! And to top it all off, there’s a fantastic outdoor braai and dining table where you can savor every moment.
The best part? This place is completely off the grid. All the lights are powered by wind and solar energy. Pretty cool, right? Oh, and don’t worry about bathroom facilities – there’s a flush toilet and both an indoor and outdoor shower. And if you’re a pet lover, you’re in luck because this place is pet-friendly too.
So, if you’re in search of a unique and secluded beach getaway, this spot in Vermaaklikheid is a definite winner. Just make sure you’re prepared for a bit of a rustic experience. You won’t regret it!
Hey there! I’ve got some awesome info to share with you. Take a look at this:
If you’re looking for a spacious and luxurious house to stay in, I’ve found the perfect place for you!
Welcome to the House of Eels!
Capacity-wise, this place can comfortably sleep up to eight people. It has four rooms, with two double beds and four single beds. However, please note that it’s not suitable for little ones like babies or toddlers.
As for the cost, you’ll be pleased to know that it ranges from R1200 to R5000 per night. Keep in mind that there is a two-night minimum stay requirement. If you need some extra help with cleaning, a daily cleaning service is available for an additional fee.
If you’re interested in booking or have any questions, you can easily get in touch with them at koensrust.co.za.
So, what do you think? If you’re in need of a spacious and luxurious getaway, the House of Eels is calling your name!
Don’t let the name fool you! It may have a strange backstory – something about eels discovering a new home next to our house – but the only evidence of it now is a small sign by the gate. As you follow the long driveway through fields and past cows, you’ll reach our beautiful house nestled amongst green lawns and tall reeds. Inside, you’ll find a simple yet stylish decor that offers plenty of cozy corners to relax in. It’s the perfect place for families and friends to come together and enjoy a vacation.
When the sun starts to set, everyone naturally gravitates towards the central firepit outdoors. It becomes the heart of the gathering, and meals are shared around the large dining table or in the open-plan kitchen. With its thick whitewashed walls, stone floors, high ceilings, and thatched roof, the house stays pleasantly cool during the summer months. While there may not be any river views, you can easily walk to the nearby jetty in just five minutes.
There is one thing to keep in mind: we only have one bathroom connected to a bedroom. For the other guests, there’s a spacious bathroom and laundry area outside that everyone can use.
Capacity: This place can accommodate up to 10 people in five bedrooms. The bedrooms consist of three king/double beds and six single beds. If you’re bringing toddlers along, just keep in mind that they’ll need some supervision.
Cost: The cost per night ranges from R4000 to R6000. However, please note that there is a minimum two-night stay requirement. The price includes access to a large rowing boat and three canoes for your enjoyment.

Unbeatable location and distinct style
4. Hill House
I have found the perfect choice for you: a small, cozy cottage with a charming thatched roof, designed in a traditional style. The cottage has a lovely L-shape and features a beautiful vine-covered porch. From the porch, you can enjoy picturesque views of the river and the garden, framed by charming cottage-pane windows. And the best part is that the river is right there, practically a part of the garden! You can jump off one of the two jetties, go for a row in the boat or canoe, or have fun on the famous Vermaak rope swing, which is a big hit with kids.
Owner Michelle Hill has created a space that is elegantly relaxed. She has placed a comfortable linen sofa next to the indoor braai-fireplace, so you can cozy up by the fire. And if you prefer a more adventurous bathing experience, you can take a soak in the fully functional outdoor bathtub in the garden. The cottage is also filled with an eclectic collection of vintage bric-a-brac that adds both charm and functionality. The old wrought-iron beds are adorned with silky linens, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. And if you’re in need of a refreshing shower, you can choose between two outside showers with stunning views.
You’ll love spending time on the stoep and in the lush, well-maintained garden. It’s the perfect place to relax and entertain. In addition to the spacious outdoor braai platform, there’s also a fantastic pizza oven, daybeds for lounging, and a sheltered dining area with a long table overlooking the river. And for those who enjoy cooking, the kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need to create delicious meals.
What more could you ask for? This lovely cottage offers the perfect blend of comfort, charm, and natural beauty. It’s the ideal getaway for anyone looking to relax and unwind in a serene riverside setting.
Hey there! Looking for an amazing getaway? Well, do I have the perfect spot for you…

5. Thorn & Feather
Capacity: This incredible retreat can comfortably accommodate up to ten people. You’ll have access to three beautiful bedrooms, with a separate barn that can house up to six children or teens (please note that no kids under eight years old are allowed).
Cost: The prices for this slice of paradise range from R4000 to R6000 per night. Keep in mind that there is a minimum stay requirement of two nights.

It took me and my team of builders two years to create this amazing family compound on the ridge above Oshoek Farm. From here, we have a breathtaking view of the S-bend river as it carves its way south. Our sleeping arrangements consist of three separate cabins made from the beautiful white rock we found on-site. Each cabin has its own entrance and is located on a different level.
The main house is the heart of the compound. It has an open-plan kitchen and dining area that doubles as a study. We’ve made sure this space is always warm and cozy by installing a wood-burning stove. Just beyond the kitchen area, you’ll find glass doors that lead to a separate lounge with a fireplace. It’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a long day.
But let me tell you about the highlight of our compound – the bath house. This luxurious space is open to the elements, giving you stunning views of the surrounding bush. Inside, you’ll find a huge room with an open shower and a bathtub big enough for two. The best part? We heat the water using a donkey boiler fueled by invasive rooikrans. Not only does this provide warmth for your bath, but it also helps us combat the spread of this invasive species. Every day, one of our staff members comes to light the boiler, ensuring that you have piping-hot water for your relaxation.
If you feel like exploring the river, it’s only a three-minute stroll down the hill. And while we’re off the grid, our system can handle a maximum capacity of 2kW. Unfortunately, that means hairdryers and dishwashers are a no-go here. But trust me, the beauty and tranquility of our compound more than make up for those modern conveniences.
Capacity: I can accommodate up to nine people in three bedrooms (six adults and three children). You’ll have plenty of space to relax and unwind.
Cost: The cost for a night’s stay ranges from R2400 to R3250. You’ll need to book a minimum of two nights. This price includes a variety of water activities, such as canoes, kayaks, and an SUP board. You’ll also have daily housekeeping service to keep things neat and tidy.
Contact: If you’re interested in booking, you can reach me at thornandfeather.com. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to check availability.
Best budget choice
6. Deck Plek
Hey there! Let me tell you about the coolest new addition to the River Magic family: Deck Plek. This place is absolutely magical! To get there, you’ll need to take a boat ride, which adds a bit of excitement to your journey. Don’t worry, though – Kyle, the property manager, will be there to take care of you, your guests, your luggage, and even your four-legged furry friends. That’s right, dogs are welcome too!
As you approach Deck Plek, you’ll notice its charming pitched roof and an extended veranda with a spacious downstairs stoep. This amazing sight against the lush green backdrop lets you know that you’re in for an incredibly relaxing getaway. Speaking of which, Kyle himself built the shade structure above the outdoor dining table and the upstairs deck – how cool is that?
The interiors of Deck Plek are simple, yet stylish. As you enter, you’ll find a spacious kitchen, dining, and lounge area. On the ground floor, there are three cozy bedrooms and a small bathroom (though the shower space could use a little more room – that’s the only downside of the house). Upstairs, there’s a large loft with four single beds and a separate area with a double bed. Oh, and there’s even a separate toilet for extra convenience.
But wait, there’s more! Deck Plek also offers an outdoor shower, which is much nicer than the one inside. And no matter where you are in the house, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the river. Deck Plek is located quite far upstream, about 12 kilometers from the river mouth and the beach. This means you’ll be surrounded by an incredible variety of birdlife and enjoy unmatched privacy.
So, if you’re looking for an enchanting getaway, Deck Plek is the place for you. Book it now and get ready for a truly magical experience!

P.S. If you love romance, tranquility, and breathtaking views, you’ll fall head over heels for The Boathouse. Trust me, this is the place you’ve been searching for. Don’t miss out!
This boathouse is truly unique. It’s the original boathouse on the stunning Oshoek Farm and it offers the closest riverside location in Vermaaklikheid. When you open the double doors, you’re greeted with the breathtaking view of the water, inviting you to roll right in. The boathouse itself is a charming and rustic renovation. It’s a single room covered with thatch, and the bedroom is separated from the dining area by kitchen cabinets. There’s even a fold-out couch in the dining area, making it a cozy space for relaxation.
Attached to the boathouse are two cubicles for the shower and toilet. However, it’s worth noting that you can only access these facilities from outside, which may not be ideal during rainy weather. But don’t worry, plans are already underway to create a direct entrance to the toilet from the bedroom. This will make it much more convenient for guests.
When the sun goes down, the boathouse transforms into a romantic sanctuary. The soft glow of candles and paraffin lanterns fills the room, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. The Godin wood stove provides comforting heat, while the gas-powered fridge and geyser ensure your needs are taken care of. It’s not luxury in the traditional sense, but the boathouse makes up for it with its incredible location and spaciousness.
What truly sets this boathouse apart is the fact that you share the entire 20-hectare farm and 600 meters of river frontage with just three other houses. This means you have plenty of privacy and tranquility to enjoy during your stay. One of the highlights is the ability to strip down and walk into the balmy water at night. Imagine floating under a sky filled with countless stars, feeling completely at peace.
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, this boathouse is the perfect choice. Its unique charm and stunning surroundings will make your stay an unforgettable experience. So why wait? Book your stay now and prepare to be amazed.
How many people can stay: This accommodation is suitable for two adults sharing a bed and can accommodate a third person on the couch. Keep in mind that a minimum two-night stay is required, except during the winter season. Canoes are also provided for your enjoyment.
Why you should consider this:
8. Vermaaklikheid Olive Farm
Let me tell you about these two charming cottages that you can find near the village post office. They are simple and cozy, perfect for a couple’s getaway. It’s great to see accommodation options just for couples, and these cottages are a welcome addition to the area.
Out of the two cottages, Hannah se Huis is the larger one. It used to be a laborer’s cottage but it has been renovated to create an open-plan space. Inside, you’ll find a wood-burning oven, adding to the rustic and romantic atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to escape to during the winter months.
In contrast, The Boathouse is located right by the river. Its riverside location is what sets it apart, especially during the summer months. You can’t beat the peacefulness and serenity of being by the water.
If you visit in April, you’ll have the opportunity to help pick olives. Judith Loewenthal, the owner, makes a peppery olive oil called A Taste of Vermaaklikheid, and it’s absolutely delicious.
The cost is R800 per night, which is a great deal considering the unique experience you’ll have. If you’re interested, you can call 0827026282 or find more information on Facebook.
9. Peter’s House
Looking for the best option at Oshoek River Farm? Look no further than this gem! With its prime location and unbeatable value, it’s the smartest choice you can make. Nestled right by the river bank and surrounded by beautiful lawns adorned with trees, this thatched house is a true oasis. It can accommodate up to seven guests in total comfort, with two bedrooms and a loft upstairs (which you can access via an outdoor staircase). The living area, with its high ceilings and open-plan design, seamlessly flows onto a deck that offers breathtaking views of nature’s beauty. And the cherry on top? Unlike other houses in Vermaaklikheid, this one comes with a TV. Just remember to bring your own DStv smart card for your entertainment needs. The cost for a night’s stay is R1800, with a minimum booking requirement of two nights (unless it’s winter). For more information and to book your stay, visit capestay.co.za/oshoekriverfarm.
10. Marshall Farm
If you’re looking for another great place to stay by the riverside, I’ve got just the option for you. It’s a short stroll upstream from Hill House and offers a comfortable stay for 11 people in four bedrooms. Plus, there’s an additional loft room that you can reach through an outside staircase. The outdoor area is fantastic too. There’s even news of plans to build an amazing jetty by David Marshall, which will make this spot one of the best places to chill out by the river. Prices range from R4000 to R7500 per night, with a minimum stay of two nights. You can find more information at perfecthideaways.co.za.
