10 Amazing Backpackers for Your Adventure in South Africa

I live a nomadic lifestyle, sometimes sleeping in my car or even in a tent. But even I crave the comforts of home – clean sheets and a rejuvenating hot shower. I want to share with you my top ten favorite backpackers in the Western and Eastern Cape of South Africa, where I’ve had unforgettable experiences.

Before we dive in, let’s find out if backpacking is right for you. Check out these 10 tips for first-time backpackers to help you get started.

1. Cape Agulhas Backpackers

Location: Cape Agulhas, Western Cape

This is where my backpacking journey began, my own personal Genesis. And it surpassed all my expectations. Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa, and being able to explore this unique location is not only an incredible experience but also a great story to share with others. If you’re visiting South Africa, this is a must-see destination.

I’m happy to recommend Cape Agulhas Backpackers as a super cool spot. They even have an activity center right across the road where you can try out all sorts of watersports like adrenaline-pumping boat rides, stand-up paddleboarding, and some of the best kite surfing in South Africa. If you’re just looking to dip your toes in the water, you can hang out with stingrays in the harbor.

Besides all the usual awesomeness you’d find at a backpackers, they also have one of my favorite bars to grab a beer. I can’t quite put my finger on why I love it so much. Maybe it’s because it was where it all began. But the beer is great, the staff is incredibly laid-back and friendly, and it sets the perfect vibe for the Going Homeless Project I’m working on.

In fact, it’s the first place I ended up staying longer than I planned. And with good reason. Stop by and check it out. It’s packed with awesomeness.

2. Backpackers Paradise

Oudtshoorn, Western Cape

Hey there! Let’s talk about birds, shall we?

Oudtshoorn, a small town on the R62, is nestled amidst the beautiful Outeniqua Mountains, not too far from George. It’s a fantastic spot for travelers like you and me, offering a wide range of activities and a centrally located backpackers that’s pretty cool.

The Backpackers Paradise has got you covered with a variety of tours, including awesome biking options. And guess what? It’s also a stone’s throw away from the majestic Swartberg Pass. Plus, they organize daily braai’s (South African barbecues) and have a lively bar, so you’ll never be short on socializing opportunities. You’ll love chilling by the giant indoor fireplace or in the lounge area, where you can make friends with fellow travelers.

Now, no trip to Oudtshoorn is complete without a visit to one of the ostrich farms. And let me tell you, the Cango Caves are a must-see too! And if you have a car, don’t miss out on the incredible Swartberg Pass – trust me, it’s one of those mountain passes that will take your breath away. Plus, Oudtshoorn offers a unique and refreshing change from the coastal destinations along the Garden Route.

5. Island Vibe

Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape

When I say “on the beach,” I mean right on the beach! My only regret about my time in Jeffreys Bay was that it was too short, and unfortunately, the sea was flat when I was there. Not ideal for a surf destination, but I can’t blame anyone except Mother Nature. It’s hard to be angry when she graces us with gems like Jeffreys Bay.

Wow, you’ve got to check out Island Vibe Backpackers if you’re ever traveling up the Garden Route. It’s a must-visit spot, trust me. They say location is everything, and let me tell you, Island Vibe has got that covered. Their accommodations and bar offer breathtaking panoramic views of the beach. Seriously, it’s like living right on the sand! If you really want to treat yourself, you can even upgrade to their Beach House for that extra beach-living experience.

Welcome to the Aardvark Guesthouse and Backpackers—a hidden gem that captures the spirit of Addo National Park in its beautifully decorated rooms, adorned with local art and sculpture.

When I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the owners, Daniel and Claude. Little did I know that this area had so much more to offer than just the national park! It turns out that local knowledge beats the internet yet again. Daniel and Claude, with their wealth of insider information, revealed a whole new side of Addo to me.

One of the most unforgettable experiences was a canoe trip up the Sundays River with Criss Cross Adventures. As I glided down the calm waters, surrounded by the beauty of nature, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. And let me tell you, visiting Daniel’s cheetah farm was an absolute highlight of my stay. Witnessing these majestic creatures up close was truly a surreal experience.

7. Escape to a Magical World

Hogsback, Eastern Cape

There’s a place known as Hogsback that has captured my heart. Nestled in the breathtaking Amathole mountains, it offers an experience like no other along the coastal route I’ve traveled. Hogsback’s beauty and charm are simply awe-inspiring.

On top of a cliff, overlooking the stunning native forests, stands Away with the Fairies – an ideal base for exploring Hogsback. Step out of the garden and into the woods to discover enchanting waterfalls. Don’t forget to visit the local artists and potters, and make sure to stop by the Ecology Shrine for a unique perspective on life while exploring the Labyrinth.

Hogsback offers a truly remarkable experience, unlike anything else in South Africa. If you’re tired of the usual coastal views, this is the place to be. And of course, don’t miss the opportunity to take a bath at the end of the world.

8. The Falls

Tsitsa Falls, near Maclear in the Eastern Cape.

This is quite a surprise in my journey so far – a destination I had never heard of. Tsitsa Falls, located about 40km from Maclear in the Eastern Cape, offers an off-the-grid experience that is truly amazing, and that’s without even seeing the falls.

The backpackers’ accommodation is in the old farmhouse. From its front porch, you can gaze out over the valley and enjoy a breathtaking view. Despite being off the grid, it doesn’t lack any modern conveniences. The beers are cold, the showers are piping hot, and you have everything you need. In this place, you can forget about the modern world, and that’s what makes it so special.

When it comes to choosing the right outdoor adventure, Tsita Falls should be at the top of your list. I can’t find enough words to express how amazing this place is. From the breathtaking views from every angle of the falls to the opportunity to walk right into it, Tsita Falls is a true gem. But the real adventure begins when you zip line down into the gorge – it’s the only way to truly experience the thrill.
