1. The Red Shed

10 of our favourite farm stays around South Africa

Hey there! Welcome to the beautiful spot on Bushy Park Farm in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. I’m here to tell you all about this amazing place that I had the pleasure of experiencing. Let’s get started!

First things first, this spot is truly unique because it has eight kilometers of stunning beachfront. Can you imagine waking up to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore? It’s like a dream come true!

But that’s not all. This place is also a working dairy farm with a small shellfish industry. The farm is absolutely picturesque, with vibrant green fields and adorable cows peacefully grazing. It’s the epitome of country living.

One of the things I loved the most about this place is the incredible birdlife. The garden is filled with an abundance of birds, thanks to the untouched vegetation along the coast. Every morning, I woke up to the sweet melodies of nature. It was truly magical.

Now, let’s talk about the accommodation. It’s not your typical farm stay. Picture a modern glass box with two king-size beds and a bunk bed on a mezzanine level. On the ground floor, there are two double sleeper couches for extra guests. It’s the perfect setup for a family or a group of close friends.

And guess what? There’s more! The property also features a pool, a tennis court, beautiful gardens, and even a trampoline. It was originally designed as a playground for the owner’s kids, but now it’s available for all of us to enjoy. How cool is that?

If this sounds like your kind of getaway, you’ll be glad to know that it can accommodate up to 10 people. For bookings and rates, you can check out the link provided. Don’t miss out on this incredible experience!

2. Cobb Cottage

I recently came across an interesting type of building material called cobb. Have you ever heard of it? It’s a mixture of clay, sand, and straw that has been used for centuries to construct houses. The use of cobb in architecture dates back to ancient times, and it’s fascinating to see how this natural material has stood the test of time.

Cobb has many benefits as a building material. For one, it’s abundantly available and easy to work with. You can find the necessary ingredients – clay, sand, and straw – in most areas, which means you don’t need to rely on expensive or hard-to-find materials. Plus, cobb is incredibly versatile. You can mold it into different shapes and sizes, allowing for creative and unique architectural designs.

Moreover, cobb provides excellent thermal insulation. The mixture of clay, sand, and straw creates a material that is both dense and porous, making it ideal for trapping heat in the winter and keeping a house cool in the summer. This natural insulation can help reduce energy consumption and create a comfortable and sustainable living environment.

Another impressive feature of cobb is its durability. Despite being made of simple ingredients, cobb structures have proven to withstand the test of time. The mixture hardens over time, further strengthening the walls and making them resistant to weathering and decay. This longevity means that cobb buildings can last for generations, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to construction.

But it’s not just the practical benefits of cobb that make it appealing. There’s something about the rustic, earthy charm of cobb cottages that captivates the imagination. The organic look and feel of the material create a connection to nature that is hard to replicate with more modern building materials. Living in a cobb cottage can feel like stepping back in time, embracing the simplicity and beauty of traditional architecture.

So, if you’re looking for a unique and sustainable approach to building a home, cobb might be worth considering. Its abundance, versatility, insulation properties, and durability make it an attractive option for those who appreciate the beauty and practicality of natural materials. Discover the magic of cobb and experience the joy of living in a truly special home.

If you ever find yourself driving on the N12 through the Karoo Highlands, keep an eye out for Rietpoort. This old family farm is around 30 kilometers from Victoria West on a quiet road to Britstown, and there’s a good chance you’ll discover something here that you’ve never seen before. The farm is scattered with dolerite outcrops that contain petroglyphs carved by the San people during the Stone Age. But what will really amaze you is the “Bushman’s Piano,” a stack of igneous volcanic rocks made of silica-rich rhyolite. If you tap each rock with another stone, you’ll hear a beautiful musical note that echoes across the vast Bo-Karoo plains, transporting you back to a time of moonlit trance dances.

At Rietpoort, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the starry skies, explore numerous hiking trails, or go on a full-day mountain biking adventure. And after a day of outdoor activities, you can indulge in some delicious local lamb, homemade treats, or other traditional boerekos dishes. The farmhouse itself dates back to the early 1800s, boasting yellowwood floors, pressed metal ceilings, and thick walls that provide a cozy refuge from the extreme weather conditions of the Karoo.

Rietpoort is not just a remarkable place; it’s also an eco-friendly farm that operates entirely on solar and wind energy. The farm is sustained by a reliable underground spring that keeps the Karoo oasis lush and vibrant. So if you’re looking for a unique and sustainable getaway, Rietpoort is the perfect destination.

7. My Apology to Her Majesty

Today, I want to talk about a unique and important experience I had: apologizing to Her Majesty, the Queen. Let me tell you why it was a significant moment for me.

Firstly, you may be wondering why I had to apologize to the Queen in the first place. It all started when I unintentionally caused some trouble during a royal event. I made an innocent mistake that led to a bit of chaos, and I felt terrible about it. So, I took it upon myself to make things right and apologize directly to Her Majesty.

Apologizing to someone as distinguished and respected as the Queen can be quite nerve-wracking. The weight of my actions and the importance of the apology were not lost on me. I was genuinely remorseful and wanted to express that to Her Majesty in a sincere and heartfelt way.

As I walked into the grand room where the meeting was to take place, I felt a mix of awe and anxiety. The room was filled with history and tradition, and I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the significance of the moment.

When Her Majesty entered the room, I was struck by her presence. She exuded grace and poise, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of reverence in her presence. It reminded me of the immense responsibility she carries as the Queen.

As I began to speak, I stumbled over my words. I wanted to convey my sincerest apologies, but the weight of the situation seemed to make it difficult for me to find the right words. However, Her Majesty’s calm and understanding demeanor put me at ease. She listened attentively and nodded, showing that she acknowledged my apology.

After I finished speaking, Her Majesty looked at me kindly and said, “I appreciate your apology and your sincerity. Mistakes happen, and what matters is how we learn from them.” Her words were a gentle reminder that even those in positions of power understand the fallibility of human nature.

Apologizing to Her Majesty was a humbling experience that taught me an important lesson about accountability and growth. It reminded me that our actions, no matter how small, can have an impact on others and that it’s crucial to take responsibility for our mistakes.

In conclusion, apologizing to the Queen was a memorable moment that I will always cherish. It allowed me to reflect on the importance of humility and personal growth. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the valuable lesson it taught me.

I’m in Harrismith, Free State, and I discovered this amazing renovated farmhouse surrounded by a beautiful garden filled with vibrant flowers. It’s just a short 17-kilometer drive from the N3. When you stay here, each room opens up to a lovely covered porch with a mesh door. The porch is covered in vines and provides a shaded retreat. And let me tell you, the attention to detail is incredible. Fresh flowers are displayed in every room, adding a touch of nature indoors.
