1. The Perfect Romantic Getaway
Summerfields Retreat
Rated No. 2 out of 13 Hotels in Hazyview on TripAdvisor
When the sun begins to set, I pass the gin bar overlooking the dam and listen to the honking geese making their way into the water. As I trundle down the dirt track, surrounded by macadamia and litchi orchards, two porters await to guide me along. We pass a sign that reads ‘no children under 12’ and continue onto a boardwalk that winds under a lush canopy of trees. Eventually, we arrive at my luxurious tent, complete with an amazing open-air bath and shower. I can’t help but sprawl out on the daybed, taking in the melodic birdsong and the soothing sound of the gurgling Sabie River. It’s moments like these that make me want to reach out and give someone a high-five.
When you first arrive at this amazing retreat, you’ll immediately notice its incredible location. But it’s not just the location that makes this place special. The design of the retreat is absolutely spot on, with a perfect balance of rustic charm and modern elegance. The highlight is definitely the bar, which hangs over the sandy riverbank and offers breathtaking views. And let’s not forget about the spa facilities, which are truly marvelous.
Now, let me tell you about the River Café. It’s located in a brand new glass conservatory, and let me tell you, the food is fantastic. If you’re a fan of vegetarian curry, you have to try it here. Oh, and did I mention that you can enjoy your meal next to a cozy, blazing fire? It’s the perfect setting for a delicious dinner.
But this retreat is so much more than just a place to stay for one night. It’s a destination in itself. And trust me, it’s worth every penny you spend. So, if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable experience, this retreat is the perfect choice.
Room Recommendation If I were you, I would change my travel dates so I could reserve a tent by the river (1 to 6, with No. 1 being the closest to the main lodge). This way, you can enjoy breathtaking views and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the flowing water.
Price Prices start at R2,097 per person for bed and breakfast.
Contact Information For more information or to make a reservation, you can call 013-737-6500 or visit their website at summerfields.co.za.
2. The Ultimate Hotel Experience
Perry’s Bridge Hollow
Ranked as the number one hotel out of 13 in Hazyview on TripAdvisor.
Out of all the fantastic hotels in the Seasons in Africa collection, Perry’s Bridge Hollow is the cream of the crop. The rooms are situated in beautiful gardens, with single-story blocks arranged in a terrace-like manner. As soon as you step foot into the reception area, you’ll be dazzled by the glamorous and sophisticated decor. It’s clear that other people agree as well, as this hotel has received numerous prestigious awards. The staff members are incredibly warm and welcoming, and they take great pride in their hotel’s accomplishments.
Right on the outskirts of Hazyview, tucked away behind a quiet shopping area, this place is perfect if you want to get to Kruger National Park quickly (just a 15-minute drive) and also enjoy some shopping therapy at the nearby Perry’s Bridge Trading Post. Plus, there are plenty of great restaurants in the area to choose from. And let me tell you, the pool is absolutely delightful, and the gardens are a real treat. If you’re looking for a place where you can have all the luxuries of a hotel, this is definitely the best option.
My Recommendation For the best rooms with a view of the pool, I suggest choosing rooms 22 to 26. These rooms have lovely shaded verandas that offer unobstructed views. If you prefer a bit more privacy, rooms 27 to 30, located behind some shrubbery, are also great options. And if you’re traveling with your family, there are three larger family rooms available as well.
Pricing The cost for a room at this hotel is R2,000 per person sharing and includes breakfast. However, if you book online, you may be able to find a room for as low as R1,174 per person.
3. The Best View
Tanamera
Ranked number 2 out of 54 specialty lodgings in Hazyview on TripAdvisor
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, Tanamera is a top choice. It is often considered the most romantic place to stay in the area, and it offers stunning views. Whether you prefer the comfort of solid walls or the adventure of canvas tents, Tanamera has something for everyone.
Imagine being perched high above the Sabie River gorge, surrounded by lush indigenous forest and the sound of rushing water in the distance. That’s the experience that awaits you at these luxurious units. They are more than just places to sleep – they’re like small cottages, with every detail thoughtfully designed for your comfort and pleasure.
Step inside and you’ll find an open fireplace, perfect for cozy nights in. The dining area is intimate, with enough space for just the two of us. And if you don’t feel like going out, you don’t have to – all your meals can be served right here in your room.
But the real treat is the bathroom. Picture a large stone bath, beckoning you to relax and unwind. Or, if you prefer, you can take a refreshing shower in the indoor or outdoor walk-in showers. The choice is yours.
Outside, you’ll find a deck on stilts, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and the Sabie River glistening in the distance. And if you’re feeling a bit warm, you can take a dip in your very own plunge pool. It’s the perfect way to cool off and soak up the beauty of nature.
Despite the privacy of each unit, they are still conveniently located close to each other. You can easily access the main lodge via a meandering boardwalk. There, you’ll find an open-plan lounge-bar-dining room that offers the same stunning view. It’s the ideal place to relax with a drink and enjoy a delicious meal.
So, if you’re looking for a truly special getaway, look no further than these dreamy units. They will transport you to a world of luxury and tranquility, where every moment is filled with beauty and serenity.
My Recommendation If you’re searching for the perfect room, I suggest booking one of the four Luxury River View suites. These suites are spacious and extravagant, giving you a true sense of luxury. Suite No. 2 is especially close to the main lodge, making it a convenient choice.
Pricing You can expect to pay R2,450 per person when sharing a room on a dinner, bed, and breakfast basis.
4. Most Authentic
Böhm’s Zeederberg Country House
Ranked 12th out of the top 25 B&Bs/Inns in Sabie on TripAdvisor.
Back in 1975, my family, the Böhm’s, took a leap of faith and purchased a breathtaking piece of land. This land, perched high on a ridge overlooking the Sabie Valley, seemed like the perfect location to open a lodge. And so, we did. Welcome to our humble abode.
Now, it’s my turn to shoulder the responsibility. My name is Renate Gerdes, and I am the proud daughter of the original owners. Not only am I carrying on the legacy, but I am also a qualified tour guide. I believe in preserving the past and embracing the future.
So, when you step foot inside our lodge, you’ll be instantly transported to a different era. Our guest house has remained true to its roots, staying relatively untouched throughout the years. We could have upgraded and modernized, but we wished to maintain the authentic old-school atmosphere.
As you explore our lodge, you’ll notice the sturdy timber furniture, evoking a sense of history and tradition. The design features include elegant arches and whimsical crazy paving, reminding us of classic East African safari lodges.
However, don’t be mistaken. While we honor the past, we also offer all the modern comforts and amenities you’d expect. It’s the perfect blend of old and new, creating a unique experience for our cherished guests.
So, whether you’re seeking a nostalgic trip down memory lane or an adventure into uncharted territory, you’ll find it all at our lodge. Come join us and make your own unforgettable memories in this beautiful corner of the world.
When you stay at this lovely retreat, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the beautiful garden and the delightful songs of birds. The cottages are strategically located to offer you the best views, each with its own unique charm. The rooms are comfortable and can accommodate up to four people. I noticed that every deck has Trellidoors, which I was informed is a precautionary measure. Fortunately, no incidents have occurred. While some subtle upgrades would be welcome, I hope that the inherent charm of this enchanting place will stay intact.
“I have a great tip for you when it comes to choosing a room at this wonderful place. Ask for room number 5, and if that’s not available, then room number 15. These rooms are freestanding, which means they offer more privacy compared to the others, most of which are attached to another room. Plus, both of these rooms have their own verandas with beautiful views. So you can enjoy the scenery in peace.”
Now, let’s talk about the cost. It’s actually quite reasonable. For just R800 per person, you can have a comfortable room with breakfast included. And keep an eye out for any special offers they might have!
If you’re interested in booking a room or have any questions, you can contact them at 013-737-8101. You can also visit their website at bohms.co.za. Feel free to reach out to them for more information.
5. Best Glamping
Now, let me tell you about one of the best places for glamping in Hazyview – Africamps at Mackers. It’s been ranked number 8 out of 54 speciality lodgings on TripAdvisor, so you know it’s amazing!
I have a few Africamps in mind that I would like to recommend, but I have to say, this new one is the best so far. It’s the first one they’ve set up outside of the Western Cape, and the location is just fantastic. It’s right on the banks of the Sabie River, surrounded by beautiful natural vegetation.
There are 10 tents in total, all positioned along the river. Each tent is the same and follows the classic Africamps layout. At the back, there are two bedrooms separated by canvas walls. Each bedroom has a double bed, and one of them even has a single bunk bed above it. The two bedrooms share a bathroom. In the front, there’s a spacious open-plan living area with a fully-equipped kitchen. And to keep things cozy, there’s a wood-burning fireplace.
The tents open up onto a big outdoor deck, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of the river. In Hazyview, they’ve added some built-in sofas on the deck, so you can really soak in the scenery. The property also has a wonderful pool area and a convenience store stocked with everything you might need during your stay.
Here’s a tip: If you’re looking for a private spot, try Tents 1 and 10. Tent number 1 is especially nice because it’s situated near a calm, slow-flowing part of the river.
As for the cost: It starts at R595 per person for two people, and then it’s R250 per person after that. If you’re bringing kids, it’s only R125 per child.
If you need to get in touch: Call 021-300-5694 or visit africamps.com
6. The Best Option Overall
Ashbourne Country Escape is ranked number 3 out of 33 B&Bs/Inns in Hazyview on TripAdvisor.
According to Rob Topham, retirement should look like this: waking up to Dawne saying, “You know, I’ve been thinking…” Rob jokes with a sparkle in his eye. These two are always creating, and their Country Escape just keeps getting better. The website can barely keep up with their constant additions.
I’ve recently discovered a hidden gem tucked away in the countryside. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a charming bar area and a terrace where you can relax and soak in the beautiful surroundings. The property offers a variety of accommodation options, including four self-catering units. Each unit comes with its own plunge pool, so you can take a refreshing dip whenever you please.
What strikes me most about this place is the perfect blend of old and new. The thick stone walls give the buildings a timeless quality, while the steel-framed windows and cottage-paned doors add a touch of rustic elegance. The entire property feels like an extension of the original farmhouse, rooted in history and tradition.
As I step inside, I am immediately drawn to the spacious and cool interiors. The attention to detail is evident. The furnishings are tastefully chosen, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. I can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me as I take in the breathtaking views of the valleys and misty mountainscapes from the hilltop location.
But what truly sets this place apart is the warmth and generosity of the hosts and their staff. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel like part of the family. They go above and beyond to ensure that your stay is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and experience a sense of belonging.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable retreat, this is the place for you. The combination of beautiful surroundings, elegant interiors, and exceptional hospitality make it a truly special destination. Trust me, once you experience it for yourself, you’ll never want to leave.
Room Recommendation If you prefer to cook for yourself, I highly suggest staying in Mountain View 9. This cozy room is perfect for two people and comes with a lovely pool, a spacious L-shaped stoep with a braai, and stunning views from every window. However, if you’re looking for a bed and breakfast experience, I highly recommend booking the Balcony Suite. It’s the best room in the B&B.
Prices If you choose to go the self-catering route, you can expect to pay R1,100 per person when sharing. For a bed and breakfast option, the price is R1,050 per person when sharing.
7. Amazing Deals
These two charming options, located just 15 minutes apart, have a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. They are both traditional lodges with thatched roofs in the beautiful Lowveld region. What sets them apart is the personal touch of the owners, who live on-site and have carefully selected their staff.
Rissington Inn, on the right, is the more luxurious of the two. The owner, Chris Harvie, is a fantastic storyteller and runs a top-notch establishment. His restaurant, located on the premises, is known for its exceptional food and is often fully booked. Meanwhile, Hamilton Parks, on the left, is a reliable three-star safari lodge. The rooms are in separate blocks, with some accommodating up to four guests. Each room has a small terrace that overlooks the lovely garden.
What makes Hamilton Parks special is the braai facilities they offer to their guests. It’s rare to find a catered lodge that allows you to enjoy a traditional South African barbecue like this. It adds a sense of homeliness and creates a unique experience.
Room Tips If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option at Rissington Inn, don’t be fooled by the name. The Budget rooms have excellent facilities, so definitely try to book one if they’re available. As for Hamilton Parks, I recommend rooms 11 to 15. They’re located at the front and offer an unobstructed view of the surroundings. Plus, they come with a cozy fireplace.
Cost The prices for both options start at R580 per person sharing, including breakfast.
Worth A Look
8. Timamoon If you’re in the mood for a romantic and luxurious getaway, Timamoon is the perfect choice. The villas are beautifully decorated and offer breathtaking views. Each villa also has a private plunge pool and a fireplace. Keep in mind that you’ll need to drive to the restaurant for meals. Prices start at R2,400 per person sharing, including dinner, bed, and breakfast. Visit timamoonlodge.co.za for more information.
9. Kruger Park Lodge If you’re looking for a great place to stay near Hazyview, Kruger Park Lodge is the perfect choice! They have a variety of self-catering houses spread out on beautiful grounds. Some of the houses even have pools! But the best part is that all the houses have access to resort-like lodge facilities, so you can enjoy all the amenities they offer. From cozy one-bedroom units to spacious four-bedroom units, there’s a size that fits everyone. And the prices are really reasonable too! The one-bedroom units start at just R505 per person sharing, while the four-bedroom units start at R5,140 for eight people. If you want the convenience of 24/7 service and support, you can contact the central booking office at the lodge. But if you prefer dealing directly with the owners, you can do that too. Either way, you’re in for a wonderful stay at Kruger Park Lodge!
10. Thulamela B&B I gotta tell you about this incredible place called Thulamela B&B. It’s like a secret hideaway, nestled just off the R40 road. You won’t believe how it feels like you’re completely in the bush. They’ve got these awesome wooden cottages, six of ’em in total, and they each have their own private spot surrounded by beautiful plants and trees. And get this: every cottage has a spa-bath right there on the deck! How cool is that?
But that’s not all. They really go above and beyond with the little details. You’ll find a cute braai area, a hammock, and a well-stocked fridge and kitchenette in each cottage. And here’s something romantic: they scatter rose petals and light candles in your room. Talk about setting the mood!
And let me tell you about breakfast. It’s not your average breakfast at Thulamela. Oh no, they bring it right to your room! I mean, who wants to get out of bed when you can have a delicious breakfast delivered to you? And if you’re planning a braai, no worries! You can even pre-order all the braai supplies you need. They’ve got you covered.
One thing though, it’s not a place for kids. No under-16s allowed. This is a peaceful and serene getaway for adults only.
So, how much does all this awesomeness cost? Well, it starts at R990 per person sharing, and that includes breakfast. Not bad for a little slice of paradise, right?
If you’re looking for a truly special place to stay, Thulamela B&B is the real deal. It’s got everything you could ever want for a relaxing and luxurious getaway. I’m telling you, once you experience it, you’ll be hooked. Check out their website at thulamela.co.za for more info and pictures. Oh, and trust me on this one, the pictures do not do it justice. It’s even better in person!
